MgO (magnesium oxide) boluses or drench is better than baking soda when they are sick already. Baking soda seems to help dairy cattle maintain butterfat production when fed with a high concentrate ration but it isn't the best once the calf is acidotic. Usually sold as a pretty pink powder or boluses.

If there is a slaughter house nearby you can get fresh rumen fluid and pump into them. I used to have a dairy cow that had a small rumen fistula that I could get some from. Just don't be beside her when she coughed!
