North of London | A lot of people arrived in Europe from Normandy for quite a while after D-Day.
Not sure how long it was before they captured a real port and then got it fixed up to receive men and material.
Should look that up.
I had 2 uncles who went in on D+ 3 or 4 and on D +10.
Both survived with no physical injuries but they were both in the RCAF as ground crew.
I uncle told the story of resting in a grove of trees in June 1944 since the tents were so hot in the sun.
A German came over their camp and shot it up.
When he went back into the tent there was a large hole in the middle of his cot. Said he was glad it had been a hot day.
If they know the unit your friends relative was in they should be able to track when that unit went into Europe and where they traveled and fought there.
Not sure where you might find that info but sometimes a simple Google search for the unit number can turn up good info. | |
