Thanks for the link Martin. Interesting reading. Wish I had the answer.

Like most other dairy farmers, my education has been on how to increase milk production per cow, not on how to solve the marketing problem of temporary overproduction. I say temporary because historically low prices tend to increase demand in the long term. High prices destroy demand. Obviously each farm needs to make a profit or they will eventually go out of business.

I'm afraid a quota system really does not inspire much innovation or the entry of new dairymen. It simply ties up a huge amount of money somewhere other than locally. My family was in a big milk co-op years ago and they required you to "buy" equity in order to be a member. What it amounted to was a "deduction" on your milk check that went into the co-op's account for 10 years or more.

Again, I don't have any answers. Only my observations.
