I think its near impossible to prevent with any degree of certainty. If you need to find an example of the efficacy of cradle to grave socialized medicine and legislated intrusion into peoples lives, look no further than the Scandinavian countries. They have some of the highest per capita suicide rates in the world. Same goes for Japan, so this is an entirely cross cultural phenomenon that is particularly telling because its prevalent even in societies with nearly unlimited institutional resources available.

Probably going to get a lot of flak for saying this, but I really don't care. The farther a person moves away from family, the small community and regular participation in corporate worship services, the weaker they become in withstanding the effects of clinical depression and the less likely they are to receive help before suicide becomes a plausible option. Might sound trite, but sometimes "it takes a village".

BTW, I was diagnosed with clinical depression 20 years ago and have been on medication ever since. Also need to add, self medication, aka alcohol, is NOT a viable option.
