Madison Co. Virginia | My views on archaeological findings have been colored by a book, "Motel of the Mysteries" which was printed in condensed version in Reader's Digest in the 70's. In the book the author, from the year 4022, finds a motel room that's been buried since 1985. He realizes he found a ceremonial tomb when he discovers the "do not disturb" sign on the door. He goes on to explain the religious and ceremonial significance to the various items found in the room.
I suspect a lot of these findings are mislabeled(like in the article posted by OntarioCanuck). It seems that if the purpose for something isn't blatantly obvious, archaeologists just tag the find as "ceremonial", "tomb", or "religious". | |
