SW Saskatchewan | The Potash Industry pays the bills in Sask now that petroleum and Uranium is in the pits.
Unique situation, not even OPEC has the market power of the Potash industry and they are making the most of it right now. Eventually they will have competition but right now there aren't many people lining up to play footsie with Putin to get at Russian Potash. The American industry at Carlsbad, New Mexico is just a shadow of its former self and the German industry is a high cost producer.
So right now the American, European and Chinese producers are paying the piper- also a few down east Canadian farmers.
But in Saskatchewan, the farmers are mining the potash the old fashioned way- with our crops.
Probably in two or three thousand years we will be short of K as well but till then it is our farm support program.
