No offense to your Momma...but she is wrong.

Chiggers do not burrow into our skin. They drill a hole and inject an enzyme that dissolves skin cells -- then slurp it up. The skin forms a sort of tube during the process; it remains long after the chigger has left and accounts for the itching. There isn't a lot you can do about it but wait things out.
