Consider calving at a different time of year. A lot of guys will let you use their bull in the off-season just for housing and feeding him.



Thats what I do. I fall calve in Sept/Oct so I take care of someone's bull for the winter. They are happy to be rid of them instead of needing to feed them all winter. I pick them up first week of Nov, and take them back 1st week of March. I paid to rent from someone for the first couple years, but needed a new bull(because I held back replacement heifers) and the other guy wouldn't take my money. He said feed and care was enough.
