Subject: RE: Haylage vs. Balage

Northeast Iowa
We put all our hay up as baleage. Make 4x5 rounds with a Deere silage special to 582 baler. It has retractable chopping knives that I will use from time to time depending on the crop I'm baling. Everything is wrapped with a tubline wrapper, including dry hay if we get lucky enough to make it.

I grew up chopping haylage and filling harvestors on my grandparents dairy and would never go back. Seems like I can get a lot more hay put up baling and wrapping it then we ever could chopping and I believe the quality is better per bale.

Equipment use seems more efficient to me as well. We use the baler, rake and wrapper for bedding and dry hay. The flatbed goosneck trailers for hauling are also used year round. Maintenance on the equipment seems less compared to the chopping days as well.
