Just give the pile time. The crust will form and smell will lessen.
Now when you spread, the game is on again. I would recommend
incorporating asap.
Story of a fellow north of us, he stockpiled litter, his wife couldn't stand the smell.
She spent three or four days in a nice hotel in town.
