Stratford WI | Worked in a union shop for 7 years or so. Our dues went up almost every year. Our national president ended up in the clink for embezzlement. The payout on our pension keeps getting lowered. Place I was at they "negotiated" 2 contracts that allowed no pay raises for 5 years...Our union rep couldn't be bothered to even show up for a few of the negotiating sessions he did however spend time at the owners lakefront resort and when it came time to vote for these contracts he told us we should just be happy we have jobs.
I left a year into the first contract with no raises and got a job making better money and with pay raises yearly.
Spent time as a union steward and spent many hours with management fighting to keep some scumbag slackers job just because he was a union brother. On the other hand I have also spent a few arguing with management about some of their policies and getting the guys paid what they were owed by the contract.
My dad worked at an electrical contractor that had a union and non union shop under the same roof. Union shop would bid work at the local hospital then dad who was non union would be sent to do the work.
As far as I've seen, the unions are a place for corruption and graft, that don't really do much for the employee but line the coffers of the folks that run them.
