Subject: RE: Do Union Dues make economic sense?

North Central Kentucky
The value of union dues is directly related to 1. The strength and effectiveness of the Union and 2. The business practices and mindset of the employer.

My union dues are about $850/yr. My pay is about 20% above industry standard and my company is not generally viewed favorably by hourly or mid level management employees. They need some policing by the Union in labor practices and safety practices. I feel I generally get value from my $850.

The biggest gripe from our Union leadership concerning right to work legislation is that they are the collective representative of the workforce at a union facility and are legally bound to represent all employees who work under the CBA. Therefore if a non paying member requires assistance, up to and including arbitration, they are required to comply. Our Union had four arbitration cases at our facility this year, which cost around $20,000 each.

As far as political money and Unions, they are legally barred from using dues for political purposes. Many have very large political funds, but they are not comprised of dues. Most are from voluntary additional contributions from members or donors.
