When I was in college I worked pipeline construction during the summer and it was union. But the stewart never came around during my summer work time. During that time in the middle 60s the union guys did make more money per hr. than non union. But most of the guys that I know do not receive that much pension. I am not sure why.
Today I know several union guys and they work out of the hall. Since the employer can pick who ever they want from
the hall the lazy, complainer, union person will not be picked first or never if he is that bad.
A few years ago right after or during GM bankruptcy I was in a GM plant working on an emergency generator and it was union. But they had a starting pay of about $11 and could work up to $15 or so. Skilled trades were still making $26 or $28. So with the new GM I would say it was not worth being in the union.
I know a union large crane operator who works out of a hall. When he works he gets paid big bucks but he has a few issues so is not employed that much of the time. He would be a lot better off financially getting a full time non union job.
I have no use for unions as I recall going into a local bar to get lunch with my guys and the retired auto workers( who had moved into our low cost living area ) would be in there bragging about how much pension was. (Their pension was more than my guys made and my guys had a 100 times the skill set than these guys who worked in the auto plants).
And then lets not talk about the teachers unions or the local government unions that put a heavy land tax on farm land. | |
