Dalhart, Texas | ...at least in my case. I am probably like 90% of the people on NAT, grew up in a small town with no experience with a union except for what I had read about or seen on tv.
I don't know about public sector unions, have no experience with them, but my job with the railroad requires me to be in a union. There is some truth to not rewarding a good worker and not being able to do anything with the worthless one, it happens.
But if you think unsafe working conditions or unfair labor practices no longer happen, think again. I see it every day. Some out of ignorance and some just because they flat out don't care.
There is no way I would do this job without the union. My pay and benefits are because of them. I know this because I have worked along side contractors doing the exact same job and I know my pay and benefits are a lot better, although pay has come up in the last few years.
My opinion with not paying the union dues is if you don't want to pay, don't work there. You should not reap the benefits of negotiated benefits and not have to pay into the union. Now maybe you could work there and just not have the pension and protection. I don't know, just my opinion. | |
