SC WI | Ive belonged to the IBEW for 11+ years I'm finally approaching the point where I will be able to get out of paying dues if I so choose. (Wisconsin became right to work, our current contract expires next spring). My tenure in the union they've done more to hold me back than let me advance, I'm finally able to let them know how I feel with my pocketbook instead of voicemails that get no where maybe they'll work for us now we'll see.
The union likes to tell me there responsible for my wages, I like to think that I am my work in the trades has set me apart from the other lower occupations, that said the company would also like to saddle me down to & make things more restrictive for me. So in all honesty I'm going to use right to work to force the union to work harder on my behalf and behalf of the other lineman.
In a specific instance the 7 years ago or so when the economy the weak, the company offered us a poor contract at a time when we as lineman were already underpaid and it took away some of our benefits, the union had gone from being formed by lineman at the beginning to eventually including all clerical (call centers, customer service, etc) in order to get the contract to pass they gave a one time $1000 bonus to all the clerical employees which out numbered skilled workers, contract overwhelming passed & the company lost 1/3 of there lineman.
I don't think union dues make economic sense, because for the most part unless your in a particularly strong union (one the can't be outsourced & skilled labor) they can't do anything for you but collect dues. Even in the IBEW they backed Obama who promised to kill coal & it put thousands of there members out of work, I wouldn't be so anti union if they actually worked for & fought for there members instead of being another arm of the Democrat party.
