Sioux Center, Iowa | To me, your approach sounds too speculative. Most dairies I know have a plan in place before any planters roll. We can't live hand to mouth. We need to know where everything is going to come from and that it will fit into our ration plan. I would suggest contracting everything, either by the ton/cutting for legume silages, or have a price/bushel/acre for corn or grain crops. Most dairies would also want to know about the manure angle too. Some dairies, mine included, want certain silage corn genetics, corn for grain genetics (starch) and legume genetics. This is definitely something that should be discussed at length with a potential buyer around a pot of coffee before you proceed. We aint in the ole McDonald days no more. Good luck. PS Money is and may continue to be tight this year because of the low milk prices. | |
