I won't quit giving blood, but I will have to think very hard before receiving blood from the general supply, but instead will contact family/friends first if I have that luxury.
Reminds me of a story I read about a young inner city doctor.
He told of the situation where old uncle Joe needs an operation and the doctor needs to ask family and friends to donate blood for Joe. He said they often get real squeamish about getting a little blood drained out and no one agrees to donate.
The doctor said then his most effective tactic is to put on his saddest face and say" well, if no one is willing to donate, I guess we will have to use dog blood. The results are often not very good, but I guess that's what we need to do. Just in case, you might inquire about funeral arrangements for Joe. "
He said, this would get a lot of bug eyed, slack jawed looks among friends and family, and a few donors. LOL.
