go with a black gelbveih or simmental. Angus dont carry enough muscle mass to make the holstein any better. Putting a simmental or gelbvieh bull on them will help them carry more muscle which will help you sell them at a premium to holstein... possibly. If the packer is really hungry for cattle they might bid higher.. if not, you'll get holstein price just like everyone else.

holsteins lack muscle confirmation as well as ribeye size which is the biggest reason they are discounted to colored cattle. This is not a knock on the angus breed (we have a whole herd of red angus cows), but crossing that holstein with something that carries a little more muscle mass will help your chances with getting a premium.


Wouldn't they just add more frame to an already big framed Holstein? Can't speak for the Gelbvieh but most of the Simmental cattle I have seen in my life are plenty big they wouldn't tone down a Holstein much.
