What I don’t get is why we never set up a permanent base on the moon, instead of that stupid space station we set up with the Russians.

It’s a simple (well, relatively in the context of space flight) proposition to supply a station in earth orbit. The logistics of getting payload to and also contending with the moon orbit is a magnitude of difficulty and expense thousands of times greater.

I always heard their would be near nothing to be gained from it also that couldn’t be gained from the much cheaper space station in orbit.
