C IL | One of my former colleagues was a military air traffic controller.
His explaination was that an ATC was assigned a certain zone, size varies according to how much traffic the tower is handling. I believe that zone is generally a slice of the compass pie from the lower to upper bounds of controller air space, Not sure on that. There is a general traffic pattern, some sort of descending spiral/loop, ATC’s can preempt the order. Atc’s hand a plane off to the next ATC’s sector. When a new ATC comes in he or she sits and watches the prior ATC for 5 or 10 minutes before taking over until the traffic flow makes sense.
That’s what little I know.
