Prior to the increase, dad and I would do our own small repairs. They were broke, so we did not even consider asking for reimbursement. Now, since they are taking more of my coin.....we'll see.

I have had to call them in a few times to fix a county main that was broken down and creating large blowouts. Usually those were deeper than 7' deep and in sand so too dangerous for me to fix on my own.

In partial answer to your question...the eighborhood old timers would get together and clean sections of the ditch by hand (shovels). They would get paid for doing so by the district. That was back before the '60s.
