| There are a lot of motels and hotels with pretty much any price you want.
Kalahari is expensive but nice in there is a lot to do right there. Chula Vista isn't as expensive but is out of the way for all the other attractions. There are a couple family owned motels on the east end of the downtown area that might work for you with the age of the kids, it is a little quieter on that end of town.
A nice place to eat that has a local flavor is rivers edge on highway A, they have a huge aquarium that the kids would like and have good food at a fair price. They also have cabins for rent, you might want to check them out.
The only time I stay there is during conventions and that is always at Kalahari. If you are interested in a day trip, come on over to the winery, we are a little better then an hour east.
