If the trust falls short of funds the beneficiaries get a bill instead of a check. If the trust has language in it that says ”trustee is explicitly liable" then they are probably on the hook for the bill... but as trustee they can bill back costs against trust...
Beneficiaries can file against trustee and break trust, force probate. Costly though.
As said above, trusts need to be read and re-read. They can require things to happen that would normally be outside the common law. Try not to get a bill in the end. Everything else is a bonus.
