Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot
Figure out what works well in your area, watch guys that do a good job. Not necessarily those with the biggest, newest equipment. There's nothing wrong with any of that, but watch guys who are profitable. Better yet, go to work for them for a while and learn from the ground up. Then get a hold of some ground and get them to farm it, or provide machinery, custom etc for you. Start small and figure it out first.

Don't buy anymore machinery than required, and don't buy new stuff. Buy good stuff, but the new iron disease in someone trying to start out is an anchor. New machinery is fine when you actually need it, not when you want it. Do custom work, rent machinery out, etc to help pay for it. Yes, it is a job, but it's also cash.

Don't think your going to just start farming one day and quit your day job and have a good living. There isn't enough profit in most crops to pay for land, machinery, and provide an income. Once one or two of those is paid for, things start to work. Can't be scared of debt, but I'm really pleased to have most of my stuff paid for. Be content with what your doing and quit looking at the neighbors new whatever. The best kind of anything is something that you don't have a payment on.

As far as what to focus on? The business end of it. No one likes office work and spreadsheets, but that is where the most money is made.
