![](/profile/get-photo.asp?memberid=2314&type=profile&rnd=541) Dallas Center IA 515-720-2463 | The High Trestle Bridge is really something, well worth doing.
On a bike or just walk it.
North of Des Moines a few miles to Madrid, highway 17.
Signs on highway 210 just west of Madrid to closest parking.
Best parking is a bit less than 3/4 of a mile on the trail before the bridge. Second parking lot is about 800’ more. Not too bad a walk, even for this 75 year old.
Or if using a bicycle anyplace along the trail. Woodward to the west. Madrid, Ankeny, Sheldahl, Slater to the east.
The actual trestle is a little over a half mile, 130’ above the river. With all the rain, the water may be quite a bit closer.
It is quite the thing. I have walked it at least twice. Once with NAT poster Nolan Kooiker, Ross’s brother. And twice on a bicycle. All over and back trips.
And in the late 70s I walked the old trestle over the valley. Just before it was torn down.
With the guardrails you would really want to kill yourself to fall off the thing.
Several widened out rest spots with benches.
At the east end is a shelter dedicated to the memory of my friend Art, real name Mike Leo, co-founder of the Tall Dog Bike Club.
