South Central Iowa | I went up to Jasper, Marshall, Story, and N. Polk counties to rubber neck at the flooding Sunday. Rotten corn stalk smell was in the air; not everywhere, but noticeable. I last smelled that in 2008 when I lived in Ames. I was thoroughly unimpressed with the crops. The corn looks mediocre, but the beans were fair at best. Lots of yellow beans, more than a few fields in the shade of Mountain Dew. I looked at the precipitation map from NOAA for the month of June and the area received 11-14"+. There is a similar amount for approximately 30,000 square miles covering NW Iowa, SW Minnesota, NE Nebraska, and SE South Dakota. It's all very prime and I wonder how much is as unimpressive as what I saw.
Oh, I stepped through a ditch on a flat road by a flat field to look at some of these yellow beans outside Colo.... I saw the grass standing above the water in the ditch and thought it was mowed; I have waterproof boots, it'll be fine.... Well, it was four feet deep and my field trip ended! Lol
