Star Prairie, WI
Northwestern WI is somewhat better, the tourists are for the most part from the Twin Cities, and while still annoying at times, don't talk funny and think they own the entire state.

Lots of good smaller resorts in northern Polk, Burnett, Washburn counties. I don't have any Id recommend or say to stay away from, those places are just day trips for me. Bring an appetite, most every little bar, roadside cafe, and supper club has great food.

My "up north" vacation is usually to Lake of the Woods in winter for ice fishing. I spend some time around Emily MN at a friend's cabin in the summer, it's a nice area, but not many resorts that I know of.
