Its been awhile since I researched the Packers and Stockyard act but I believe a % of around 12 was mentioned. Anyone owning/ controling more than that % would have been in violation of said act. I believe Smithfield has under its control or ownership over 51% of the hogs in this country. Not a monopoly??? You can search for Packers&Stockyards act of---I believe 1929. Of course it would just be a history lesson it seems.
A while back there was a deal by some South American packer to own a rather large % of beef packing in the United States and I believe a substantial % world wide. I do believe the deal has backed off some but I don't think any of our laws had a problem with the deal.
