Nice dodge of the issue. The fact is, people have always picked and chosen what parts of religious texts they will observe. I have been informed right here that the entire Old Testament can now be ignored, superseded by the NT. Talk about being selective! The fact is that the books of the Bible were written in a slave culture and slavery was accepted as a part of life. A man could sell his 11-year-old daughter into sexual slavery and nobody would question the father's right. Sounds like a case where "rise up and rebel" might be a good thing, rather than cowardly accept your fate.
I understand you're a free thinker/atheistic type and have nothing but scorn for those that profess Christianity. I get that and certainly respect your right to your own views, but you sure exhibit a rather simplistic understanding when it comes to the bible.
Its remarkable that you fall into, or at the very least, disingenuously proport to believe that the bible is some monolithic "book" when it's nothing of the kind. Its more a library than a book and like a library it contains accounts of poetry, philosophy, history and literature. It needs to be understood as such.
Of course, for believers, its also much more than that. Its a guide and comfort while on lifes journey, not some document that lets you take one topic out of context in order to condemn the entire body of work. For the Christian, from start to finish its in a way, a progressive revelation of mans condition, his inherent depravity, his inability to stand before a just god as righteous and perfect, the need of someone to intercede on his behalf before that just god. Its all about a loving god reconciling his errant creation to himself through the person of Jesus Christ.
For folks that don't wish to believe the message, all they can seem to see is a tangle of incongruities.
My final point is more a request. I understand you're an educated man and your views deserve a courteous hearing. Id only ask you to reciprocate.
Thanks
