We have had two rounds of Dutch Elm Disease go through. The town 5 miles from me had a nickname of 'Elm city' as it was the most common hardwood around here.
Anyhow, lots of dead trees in the grove in the 80s and again 2000s.
But, this spring there were piles of Elm seed blowing around. Several large and small Elm have survived still. And not just the crappy Chinese species.
Do -any- ash trees survive through the EAB? Any at all?
Got some ash in the grove too. Some large ones are looking peaked but for 4-5 years now, think they are just old mature, and giving up. EAB is up in the Cities, so I know it's only a matter of time on that.
Going to be only silver maple and box elder left around here. Few black walnut and ironwood and hop hornbeam.

The short answer in no. So long as there's a host your ash trees are doomed. Same kind of problem here, only things left on the kind of ground ash trees grew on are soft maples and weed trees like boxelder. |
