southern MN | Dad was a miser, he couldn't bear to pull a dollar bill out of his pocket. It troubled him deeply.
When I was a little kid, He made 2 hayracks, used homesawn lumber that was in the loft. One hayrack floor was ash and black walnut planks. Sure, he could have sold them, but then he would have had to pull a dollar out of his wallet to buy hayrack flooring.
It made more sense to him this way, he didn't have to spend a penny.
He painted them dark barn red, had a can of paint around. So no one saw the fancy wood.
I always figured that was one of the most expensive hayracks ever.
I got some free pallet racks, with the good thick wood shelving. But it came from a RR, and the wood has an odor in it. Probably the weed killer they used? Left the wood outside for years now, the odor won't weather away. Just can't bring myself to put those shelf planks inside the building....
