I have done the update several times and it has never helped. Couple of other things I learned are that if you drop a call the dial *** send............ the call doesn't go anywhere but it marks it as a dropped call in their log. I think the biggest problem here is that the Verizon system is running on 1900mhz which is a weaker signal than the 800mhz.
Who has a satellite phone? I see the prices and air time have come WAY down.
