This year we "ported" our landline number to a Verizon device that costs a flat $20 per month, long distance included.  It plugs in to your house lines and all the home phones work on it just like the local phone service worked.

To save your old number you must sign up with Verizon first and then wait until the old service is disconnected, then you will be able to plug the device in and continue with the same number.

Interesting, does this mean your own landline can still dial out going through your cell phone?
I’m paying for two land lines strictly because I have alarm systems that dial me when something goes wrong with my hog confinements. One place has internet connection the other does not but does have good cell phone connection. I need this alarm system for both places so am not willing to give up the landline if I can’t dial out.
