North End I-15 | Samsol had his 9650 catch on fire in the field this fall. He saw a strange shadow looking to the rear out his right window. He stopped to have a look and fire was burning back of combine. He ran back got fire ext. Diesel was pouring out on to the straw where he stopped , fuel tank had hole melted through it. Gave a squirt on the straw pile , squirt up into rear of flowing fuel , which snuffed the fire long enough to get up and squirt engine fire out. 3 short bursts on extinguisher and it was empty. Raw fuel still running out on to ground in to smoldering straw . Wind from the SW fire would have spread across fence in to Canada . Just at that point Forrest Tupper showed up with a 5 gallon can of water and threw it on the smoldering straw pile @ rear of combine . Raw fuel still flowing in to pile. Neighbor with fire tank on 3/4 ton showed up and hosed every thing down . Insurance Agent was Stubbert . Combine being completely fixed @ no cost to Don. He had replacement cost on combine so all ends well. They never did figure out exactly what caused fire. Looks to have started in wiring harness near battery.
Tupper said most folks would have run away from a combine on fire like that .
Happy ending to a potentially disastrous fire. Could have caused an international incident :>) | |
