| Does he have grandkids and are his kids on his side? Have seen it work twice using the threat of never seeing the grandkids again if the undeserving party tried taking more than their fair share.
The first one the wife took any enterprise that she ran on the farm, ie sheep, bottle calves, her work vehicle, utility tractor. But was told not to mention anything to do with the crop side as she didn’t even bring lunch out to the field. Kids told her no contact with the grandkids if she did, one of the biggest catastrophes I’ve ever seen avoided in my life as it is a large place that she married into after it was well established.
The second one the guy married into and had worked on the farm for awhile. One of the kids was just starting to get worked into the operation. So the other kids told them to figure out a deal that worked on paper so the family farm could continue on: no outrageous land valuations etc. Exact words were along the lines: “if this place goes away, so do your grandkids, figure it out.” The settlement quickly dropped from seven to six figures. | |
