For the cost difference, I would go to a 9870 with the 6.6L, fuel use per acre at the end of the day is essentially the same but you will get more work done and it has a lot more torque reserve. In our smooth alfalfa fields we average 16+ MPH and 30 ac/hr with our 9870, most of the time we can run full stick which is 17.5 MPH. We traded up from a 9760 for the bigger HP's and are happy we did it.

Edit to add that we do 300 ac of alfalfa 5x and we do custom work for a local dairy
