We have a brush rake when we push to the pile, keeps dirt out of the pile. As others said, get a good tight center and once that is going you can burn about anything. Just keep pushing pile together and keep it as tight as you can. We do not have a thumb on the excavator but would sure be nice for pile management. Especially to get those root balls placed in the middle of the fire. Big root balls are always the problem. Local contractor likes to dig long deep trenches as he says fires stays much hotter in them but I don't like all the dirt disturbed so we try to burn as much on top as we can.
