When a turbo starts building boost and forcing more air into an engine you need more fuel to burn to keep it from leaning out.

It was easy on a diesel to accomplish this by simply turning up the injection pump and over fueling the engine, the excess fuel just went up the stack as smoke.

As has been said, it took computers to make turbos practical on gas engines. The turbo adds more air, the computer adds more fuel.
