Reliability of supply trumps total supply at any given day.

Wind and solar don't work very efficiently if their respective power source isn't going (ie cloudy day or no wind or too much wind)

I was always taught that the majority of electricity is produced as needed- can't store too much of it. Something about the Law of Conservation of Energy. I believe this is why brownouts occur - electricity transmission and electricity production systems get taxed for capacity in relation to demand.

I might be out of date though.....
