If you do decide to skip into Canada, I recommend the Sault Ste Marie to Wawa stretch of the Trans Canada. It's been a lot of years, but my memory is that stretch of road has a few lookouts over the lake that are nicer than those on the south side. Here's a link to a Wawa web page to start you off. I hot linked to a map on that site. Hope that works. Notice how Hwy 17 runs close along the lake for that stretch.
