Battle Mountain, NV is far uglier. Goldfield has some charm.

Battle Mountain has no, zero, zip charm. No old buildings. It is a town that houses the BLM, the BIA and an Indian rez. With that much government real estate in a small town, you can only imagine what it looks like: a low-rent version of Soviet-era architecture (ie, the generic double-wide in US gummint baby-poop brown) scattered across acres of sagebrush.

If Battle Mountain isn't the anus of the US, it has to be pretty darn close to it.
