Subsidies are different than mandates, no? Other industries get subsidies too. Oil company subsidies are mostly myths anyway as the large integrated firms (which most are) are not eligible for the tax breaks. Also the two largest gasoline refiners in the US are not oil companies but are required by law to blend ethanol. Foreign sources of gas and oil, which are significant, get no US subsidies or tax breaks. 

There are really only two reasons left to justify ethanol, global warming and farm support. The whole notion of security due to foreign sources of oil are obsolete as we are now a net energy exporter (thanks free markets). All the while we have subsidized world grain farmers with higher prices to finance their modernization. Now back to watching the weather in south america.
