NEND | I have a 40 x 48' shop. Too small for most of our implements, but I'm in the same boat as you, I just can't justify a big one for similar reasons. One thing I would suggest, if you would mind how it would look, is to make it wider than your existing building and extend the roof down to allow for areas on each side like office/bathroom/parts storage/tools/air compressor/welding table/etc. You don't need as much ceiling height for those Purposes and it would give you more floor space in the middle/higher ceiling area. I'd consider enclosing the air compressor for noise. If the rafters would be a lot more expensive because of the existing span, you could probably lessen the cost of them if you put a beam supported but posts in a ways from the side walls. I put a bathroom and office and a loft above them all along one side of the shop. I wish I would have extended the roof down on both sides. I probably would have made one area a cold storage (or at least insulated/unheated) area for things that don't need to be in the heated area. Other than that, there are many good ideas floating around on here. | |
