Subject: Re: ez steer motor life?

Sunnyvale, CA
An electric motor used below its ratings, like in the EZ-Steer system, is extremely reliable and will have a long life, on the order of many years. If you want to have a relative guage of how long any electric motor will last, after running it hard for an hour or so, then feel how warm it gets. If it is too hot to hold your hand on it for a few seconds, then warning flags about its lifetime can be raised. You will find the EZ-Steer motor is not even close to being to hot to touch. Touch the end of the motor opposite the drive wheel since the plastic shield is not covering that part of the motor. In one load test we wore out three foam wheels, and the motor was just as good as new with no signs of wear. The only part of the EZ-Steer system that does show wear under high loads is the foam rubber drive wheel. When the foam has worn through to the plastic hub it should be replaced. To get the longest life from the foam wheel, mount the motor as far away form the steering wheel as you can when in the "locked away" position that allows the motor to not slip on the steering wheel while in use. To reduce drive wheel slip when you grab the steering wheel to dis-endage, use the highest override sensitivity % setting that does not false trigger when engaged and steering the vehicle. Always lock the motor away from the steering wheel when not in use to reduce the spot loads on the foam drive wheel.
