northeastern Ohio | We had three rows of 21 tie stalls. One side was tail to tail with a Jamesway gutter cleaner and the other 21 tie stalls had a shuttle gutter cleaner. Converted 21 of the stalls to calf pens by putting OSB onto the dividers and tying gates to the back. The worst part was forking the manure into the gutter cleaner after we moved the calves out (no way to get a skid loader in there).
Pros: low cost, warm barn to work in during rain/snow
Cons: respiratory problems due to poor ventilation, scours, OSB eventually rotted out, maintain gutter cleaner, manually remove manure, ect....
We went to hutches around 2003. Death loss went down, respiratory problems disappeared, calves grew better/faster, ect..... Started pasteurizing whole milk in 2012. Death loss near zero ever since then.
Now we use the stalls for junk storage.... I mean supply storage. Also have a table saw for wood projects.
