Follow up.........Block heater is good, water temp registered 109 yesterday when trying to start. The 6430 has glow plugs. The glow plug light comes on with key but shuts off quickly, definitely something not right with them.

Put new battery in yesterday after running knipco on engine for an hour, still no luck. Finally the starter decided to take a complete dump, mechanic who was working on it said it definitely should crank faster than it did before dumping.

New starter shows this morning and I'm crossing my fingers it cures all my issues with this thing.

Hat's off to mechanic yesterday, it was so fricken cold in the wind while he worked on the starter with frozen fingers.

Check your tractor to verify what I'm saying. A 4.5L engine has a preheat feature, but not what I call a glow plug engine. A glow plug engine has a glow plug for each cyl, in the combustion chamber. What you have is an air intake 'preheater'. They are both aids for cold weather starting, but not very similiar otherwise.
