Subject: Re: Info/opinions on Massey Combine

If you buy it you'll quickly lean that the big "MF" doesn't stand for "Mighty Fine". I'm speaking from experience, 550 which was reclothed 510. Only poece of equipment I have owned that actually broke down sitting in the shed. :~(((((. I purchased the POS new & knew from the day I signed the papers I made a mistake.

I traded a 4400 in on the 550. The 4400 had more technology than the 550 even though it was 5 years older. The 4400 I owned was a gas which was a 292 Chevy engine. I ran a 16' platform & 444 cornhead. Got along OK as long as you didn't push it.

Traded the 550 for an IH 1440 in '82. One of the best combines I have ever owned. Ran it 10 yrs & had very few breakdowns. Ran a 20' 1020 platform & for the first 5 years a 944 cornhead & a 963 the last 5 years. IMO the 963 was a better fit as the 944 wouldn't keep enough corn in the machine & it would throw corn out the back.

Parts are readily available for the 1440 and CIH still offers new upgrades for them.
