Hydraulic industrial equipment tends to run on the rule of thumb of about a gallon of reservoir per pump output in GPM at a minimum, usually shoot for 1.5 or more if room is available. Lucky for log splitters, the weather is cool and they are not run 24 hours a day. I agree 10 gallons would suffice, maybe less, would work. I would suggest putting the pump into the reservoir and running the suction about an inch and half above the tank bottom. Never put a suction filter on the pump, always use a return filter (put good oil into the tank) it will live a lot longer that way. The pump in the oil makes it quieter and increases the suction pressure to the pump (from negative to 0 or even somewhat positive) that makes it live longer. This is easier than you think with a Vertical shaft engine if that is what you have gathered up.
