Sure there is. The question is, are you going to make money off of cattle, or is someone else going to make money off of your cattle.

I think it is like any agricultural enterprise, you'd better have a sharp pencil and figure out what suits your situation. We are way to high a cost of production around here to be commercial cow-calf producers. It works for some guys, not for me. Summer feed is too expensive, winter is too long, and ground is too expensive to graze cattle on. But, there are other ways than a cow-calf operation. I'd like to get into backgrounding calves for some ranches I know, but that would take a big investment into building a feedyard and I'm not sure they'll all be around grazing public lands like is the current scenario in another 10 years. Freight is going up, fewer number of owners but same number of calves...etc. Things change constantly, people who make it change with the times.
