Texas | Yes, you can make money in the cattle business. You can also lose money in the cattle business.
If you are broke, starting into the cattle business is not a good plan. It takes investment and time to succeed. It also takes failure on some level to learn the do's and don'ts. (Is that good grammar?)
If you have some cash that you can afford to invest for a long period of time, and if you have someone that can mentor you as needed, then it's possible to make some money in cattle.
Every situation is different and each operator needs to be able to see the opportunities unique to them. Then build your plan around your advantages and not what somebody else does.
There are as many ways to make money with cattle as there are ways to feed cattle. Start slow and get some experience on a small scale before deciding if it's for you or not.
I once had a Sunday School teacher that used the example in class of a man that bought some feeder cattle. He said if he got up the next morning and didn't look forward to feeding them, then feeder cattle weren't for him. But, if he got up early the next morning excited to feed the cattle, then he had made the right decision. I don't remember how it related to the Sunday School lesson! |
